Preservation Equity Fund Advisors appointed David McWhorter to its advisory board, adding an executive with decades of capital-formation experience as the affordable housing investment manager works to broaden its institutional investor base. McWhorter is a managing director at Institutional Real Estate Inc., where he has led the firm's Institute for Real Estate Operating Companies and IREI Advisory Partners since 2016.
Earlier in his career, McWhorter spent more than 30 years raising capital and managing relationships with institutional real estate investors. During that period, he raised more than $12 billion for real estate investment management firms including AEW Capital, Nuveen Real Estate/Henderson Global, Heitman and Carmel Partners.
At PEF Advisors, his experience will support the firm as it seeks to expand an investment strategy centered on acquiring and preserving affordable housing in high-cost U.S. markets. McWhorter's appointment gives the firm additional expertise in capital formation at a time when it is working to strengthen its position with institutional investors.
President and Chief Investment Officer Ann Caruana said she has known McWhorter for more than 20 years through the institutional real estate industry. "Mac brings an exceptional depth of experience across capital formation, investor relations and the broader institutional real estate landscape," Caruana said. "His perspective will be invaluable as we continue to grow PEF Advisors and further establish our institutional investment platform."
Founded in 2016, PEF Advisors uses private equity capital to acquire and preserve existing affordable housing, particularly in markets where high housing costs can increase pressure on existing affordable properties. The firm is an affiliate of the WNC & Associates family of companies, giving it access to a broader affordable housing investment platform with more than five decades of industry experience.
WNC has participated in the acquisition of more than 121,000 affordable housing units representing approximately $22 billion in investments nationwide through tax credit and preservation equity strategies. That background provides PEF Advisors with an established affordable housing investment infrastructure as it works to attract additional institutional capital to preservation strategies.
McWhorter joins an advisory board that includes Tony Breault, managing director of portfolio management at Ascentris; Gena Cheng, founder of Prospect Avenue Partners; Lawrence J. Hass, an attorney at Difede Ramsdell & Bender; John Hurley, chief investment officer and co-founder of Penwood Real Estate Investment; and Trisha Malone, president of Anton DevCo. The group provides PEF Advisors with experience spanning real estate investment, portfolio management, development and legal matters.
